Center for Thoraco-Abdominal Oncology

KazIOR

The Thoraco-Abdominal Oncology Department is a specialized unit within an oncology medical institution that focuses on the diagnosis, treatment, and postoperative follow-up of patients with tumors located in the thoracic (chest) and abdominal cavities, as well as in the transitional zone between them. The department combines thoracic and abdominal oncological surgery, as many tumors and pathological conditions involve anatomical structures in both the chest and abdominal cavities or are located near the diaphragm (such as the esophagus, stomach, pancreas, etc.).

Main objectives of the department:

  1. Diagnosis of malignant tumors of thoracic and abdominal localization.
  2. Performing radical and palliative surgical interventions.
  3. Postoperative management and rehabilitation of oncology patients.
  4. Participation in multidisciplinary tumor boards (with chemotherapists, radiologists, etc.).
  5. Assessment of tumor resectability and staging.

Main Areas of Clinical and Research Activities of the Center

Clinical Activities

  1. Diagnosis of Malignant Tumors

  • Use of modern diagnostic methods: CT, MRI, PET-CT, endoscopy, ultrasound, biopsy.
  • Application of molecular-genetic and immunohistochemical methods to refine the diagnosis.
  • Multidisciplinary tumor staging.
  1. Surgical Treatment

  • Performing radical, reconstructive, and palliative surgeries for tumors of:
    • Lungs, esophagus, mediastinum
    • Stomach, pancreas, liver, colon, and rectum
    • Combined thoraco-abdominal regions
  • Minimally invasive technologies: thoracoscopy, laparoscopy, robot-assisted surgery
  • Intraoperative visualization and fluorescence-guided navigation
  1. Comprehensive Treatment

  • Chemotherapy, targeted therapy, and immunotherapy (in neoadjuvant and adjuvant settings)
  • Radiation therapy (3D-CRT, IMRT, IGRT)
  • Multimodal and combined therapy according to established protocols
  • HIPEC for peritoneal carcinomatosis
  1. Patient Management

  • Individualized treatment plans developed by an oncology tumor board
  • Management of patients at all stages: from diagnosis to rehabilitation and follow-up care

Research Activities

  1. Development and Implementation of New Treatment Methods

  • Research on the effectiveness of minimally invasive surgical interventions
  • Development and testing of combined chemo- and immunotherapy regimens
  • Evaluation of the role of molecular markers in prognosis and therapy selection
  1. Participation in Clinical Trials

  • Multicenter international and national protocols
  • Studies of new drugs and treatment regimens (including Phase I–III trials)
  • Implementation of evidence-based medicine principles
  1. Scientific Publications and Conferences

  • Preparation and publication of scientific articles in peer-reviewed journals
  • Participation in international and national oncology congresses
  • Organization of scientific-practical conferences, masterclasses, and educational schools

Our specialists possess high qualifications and extensive experience in performing complex surgical interventions, including:

  • Thoracic and abdominal resections of any complexity
  • Combined and extended surgeries for invasive and advanced forms of cancer
  • Minimally invasive procedures using laparoscopy and thoracoscopy
  • Reconstructive and plastic surgeries to restore organ anatomy and function

Treatment is conducted within a multimodal approach, in close collaboration with the center’s chemotherapy, radiology, and diagnostic departments. All clinical decisions are made at multidisciplinary tumor boards, taking into account the individual characteristics of each patient.

The department utilizes modern pre- and postoperative diagnostic methods and advanced surgical equipment to ensure high precision and safety of interventions.

Primary goal: to maximize patient survival and quality of life while providing effective, safe, and individually tailored oncological treatment.

Clinical and Research Base

The Center for Thoraco-Abdominal Oncology serves as an active clinical and research base:

  • The center employs physicians, PhD candidates, and residents.
  • Scientific-practical seminars and training are conducted for physicians across the general healthcare network on early diagnosis and treatment.
  • Physicians participate in applied scientific and technical programs aimed at implementing innovative technologies in diagnostics, surgical treatment, and comprehensive rehabilitation. Currently, priority areas include the introduction of minimally invasive and robotic surgeries.

International Standards

  • Work is carried out in accordance with modern international standards for the diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer.
  • Implementation of a personalized approach to selecting drug therapy regimens (chemo-, hormone-, targeted, immunotherapy) in line with global oncology practices.
  • Use of innovative technologies applied in leading clinics worldwide.
  • Conducting seminars and educational programs aimed at translating global experience into regional healthcare.

Internships and Congress Participation

  • Physicians of the Center regularly undergo internships in leading foreign clinics, mastering advanced diagnostic, surgical, and reconstructive methods.
  • Active participation in international congresses and conferences allows for experience exchange with global experts, presentation of scientific research results, and implementation of best practices in clinical work.
  • Through this collaboration, the Center strengthens its position as a regional leader in thoraco-abdominal oncology, focused on continuously updating knowledge and technologies in line with global trends.

Membership in International Organizations

  • Physicians at the Center are members of leading international oncology organizations, providing access to the most up-to-date scientific data and clinical guidelines.
  • Participation in organizations such as ESMO (European Society for Medical Oncology) and other specialized associations supports the continuous professional development of specialists.

This enables the Center to integrate the best global practices in patient diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation, strengthening the clinic’s reputation.
